Weekday Mornings 6a - 10aLES COOK

Les Cook

My Father was in the radio business, so I have been around it all my life. He signed on WPDF in Corydon, Indiana in 1962. And I was on the air doing part time for him when I was 12!!  My first big gig came at WLRS in Louisville in 1973. Then it was off to WQHI, Hi-95 in Louisville in 1975.  From 1978 until 1987 I worked all over the Mid-West, including Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Rockford, Illinois, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan. It was an amazing time in Rock and Roll and I got the chance to work with some amazing people.  I learned a lot from them, and had opportunities to attend work shops and seminars on everything from programming to Air Personality Development.  Boring stuff for most people, but then again I am a RADIO BRAT!!!!

I came back home in 1987 and worked part-time all over the place around Louisville, including WTMT, WRKA, and WAVG. I ended up at WSLM in Salem, Indiana for 3 years, then bounced out of there for WSHE in Miami.  Great Station, great people, and Tons-O-Fun for Everyone!!  But Miami turned out to be too far from home.  I came back to Corydon and went to work for WMMG  in Brandenburg before getting the Production Director Gig at WRKA in Louisville in February of 1994, did the Production Director thing for almost 10 years, and now, as the old Harry Chapin song goes...”I AM THE MORNING DJ ON WAKY."  Playin’ all the hits for you wherever you may be!!  I love this music and the fun, up-beat style of 103.5 WAKY!  I grew up listening to those legendary stations The Big 79WAKY and WKLO, and I was inspired by the likes of Gary Burbank, Bill Bailey, Coyote Calhoun, Johnny Randolph, Brother Love, The Weird Beard, The Real Tom Dooley, "Dude" Walker, Bo Brady, Lee Masters, Mason Lee Dixon and all the others who created and refined this up-beat and fun style of Rock and Roll Radio!   They were on the cutting edge of Top 40 Radio back in the day and these guys are heroes to me.  To all of those people I say "Thank You!".  You were an inspiration to me and countless other "Jocks" who love this wild game we call RADIO!  I also thank the owners of W&B Broadcasting who not only allow, but actually encourage, this style of radio in an era of consultants, tight play lists, and "Just shut up and read the card!"  programming. We have fun here at 103.5 WAKY and you can bet that every weekday morning at 6, I'll be right there with you, brothers and sisters.

IT'S WHAT MY DADDY DID AND IT'S WHAT I DO, CAUSE I'M LES COOK - RADIO BRAT!

Middays 10a - 3p!"FAST" EDDIE LEE

Eddie Lee

Hi gang, Fast Eddie here with a little bit about me, (Les is standing over my shoulder so I need to be brief).  I am a Louisville native, born and bred (or is it bread, who can tell).  Anyway, I grew up listening to the sounds of WAKY in its heyday; I still remember the day the station signed on with Purple People Eater and Timothy L. Tyler.  In my later years, I had the privilege of not only listening to the great ones, but teamed up with the Real Tom Dooley to form Tom Dooley and the Lovelights, this not only allowed me the chance to work before live crowds (which I love), but also gave me the opportunity to work with the radio guys I idolized all these years, Johnny Randolph, Gary Burbank, Weird Beard, the Duke of Louisville Bill Bailey to name just a few.  Tom and the guys were my inspiration for going into radio, and the benchmark for any performance I have given since.  My first job in radio was just across the river at WREY radio in New Albany, where I happily stayed until some unforeseen circumstances sent me into the Air Force.  I spent 20 years there in the service of my country, and as it was, began working radio at every location I was sent.  I spent a lot of time in the Southwest between Texas and New Mexico and worked every conceivable format from Rock to Country.  In 1979 I was sent to England where I had the privilege to work in Oxford England at Radio Oxford.  I stayed two years on the air there and had the time of my life.  In 1985 I returned to the states and started working for a little station in a smaller town, KZZO Radio in Clovis New Mexico.  Little did I know at the outset that this was the town where Buddy Holly recorded his early hits, in a converted gas station owned by music genius Norman Petty, who co-wrote many of his hits.  In association with the Petty family and the city of Clovis, we put together the Clovis Music Festival, a celebration of the music and talents of Buddy Holly and Norman Petty.  I was afforded the opportunity to host many big named entertainers such as the Association, Jerry Reed, and many more.  It was, to say the least, a great time in my life.  After retiring from the Air Force, I moved to the South West coast of Florida, where I worked as Station manager for WMMY/WKII and WEEJ radio, where I got a shot and made a taped appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1994.  Eventually I moved back to Louisville with my family and got out of the business I love, ‘till now of course.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever envision working for the station that inspired so much in my life, and being around so many people who have the same passion I do for radio.  In all I have done, in all I’ll do, I couldn’t be happier to be here.

Well that’s it for me, except for blood type and DNA, but that’s another web sight.  I hope you like what you hear and you’re with us for a long, long, time.

I’m Fast Eddie Lee (and you’re not.)

Have a great day!

MARK STRAUSS                                     SUNDAY MORNINGS

On Air Personality - Mark Strauss then...

Mark Strauss Now on 103.5 WAKY!

It really did begin at a 250-watt daytime station, in 1969, which at the time was WPDF 1550-AM in Corydon, IN.  The station was owned by Les Cook’s parents. They gave me my first radio position!  I’ve had the privilege of working at several area stations, including WAKY 790-AM … where I worked as overnight DJ, Production/Promotions and, as WAKY-AM’s last Program Director. I also managed stations in Southern New Jersey and Central Illinois.  After more than a few years out of the business, I’m happily back at WAKY 103.5.  Primarily as a sales representative, but still spend a couple of hours each weekend being a WAKY “jock” and playing the music I first played when they were new!I would love to hear from you so don't hesitate to email me! Until then keep it on Fun Lovin' WAKY and listen online live with Internet streaming or catch us doing the facebook thing too!  Login to our WAKY Fan page today!

Web/Sales/Special Events KAREN ALLENN

I've been in radio for over 21 years serving in every format possible and have a real knack for copy writing and production.  I trained in Phoenix, AZ for my career in Radio and even pulled a stint in Germany on the air for AFN! (American Forces Network - Europe).  I used to love listening to Casey Kasem when I was a teen and I thought one day I might actually attempt doing radio!  Little did I know I'd still be addicted to this fast paced challenging and fulfilling career!

My husband of 16 years Ray and I are both evangelists and attend Roanoke House of Prayer in Roanoke, KY. Our youngest daughter Patience is currently a student at World Harvest Bible College, our 23 year old daughter Crystal is living with us here in KY with my adorable grandson Aron David and my son is still in TX. Radio, next to Christ and my family, is my passion and one day I may actually grow up and get a "real job!"  In the meantime, I'll keep loving the people, the music and the art of communication!

I am a major horse lover!  You'll find that horses are my "happy place" and cooking is one of my stress relievers.  Must be pretty good at it too since everyone in my house is still accounted for.  Being a member of the 103.5 WAKY family is for me "a perfect fit!"

Plus, I'm a first time Grandma (Oma)!  20 months already and back home with us here in KY with his momma! He's OUR little Ham!!!

Aron David Arnold...a photographers dream shot! These shots were performed by my  - soon to be - professional photographer daughter Patience Brianna!  Email me for her number if you'd like your little person captured like no other!  See him on facebook.com too!

Believe it or not I did not listen to the radio as a youngster.  I wanted to be a farmer just like my dad.  That is until 1983 at the ripe ole age of 12 when I visited Ed Cundiff at WLCB-AM in Hodgenville, Kentucky.  I was amazed at what I saw and realized what I wanted to do with my life.  I wanted to make a career out of radio.  So I built a studio in my room and started practicing and thanks to Ed, I got to play around a bit on the air.  Then in January of 1985 I got my first paying job at WLCB!  I worked there until April of 1986 when I made the move to Elizabethtown.  From there it was off to Louisville and Greensburg then Meridian, Mississippi and eventually back to Elizabethtown in January of 1994 where I’m still at it today at WAKY and our sister station, WLVK! As for my personal life, I'm now a single father of five!  I still live in the town where it all started in 1983, Hodgenville and am enjoying the challenge of full time parenting.

Special Events, Remotes and Sales!MIKE CUMMINS

Mike CumminsMike Cummins says...I was born and raised in Louisville, KY, I loved radio, had my own radio station in my basement at the age of 14 and did 3 - 7pm every summer! My mother thought I was crazy.  Now I reside in Glendale, KY and own the Whistle Stop Restaurant with my wife Lynn.  I still use my voice part time though!  1 - to holler out orders, and 2 - to do part time sales and on air work at 103.5 WAKY!  I love this station, getting out and doing live remotes and meeting all the great people that love the great music that make WAKY 103.5 the best station there is!  "Back in the Day" I hung out at the Legendary Big 79 WAKY and WLRS in Louisville and was their gofer! I also did some TV and a lot of public address work.  Radio is so much fun and for me...my favorite pastime! So, make sure and watch for me at all station events!  As for the new WAKY 103.5...it doesn't get any better than that!  You can't beat it so keep listening and hope to meet you soon!  Mike!
