REO Speedwagon Spearheading Flood Relief Concert
REO Speedwagon wants to help those battling the floods in the nation's heartland. LiveDaily.com says the group is staging a benefit to help with recovery efforts. Band frontman and Illinois native Kevin Cronin explains that he feels, quote, "a deep loyalty and a responsibility to do whatever we can to help our Midwestern brothers and sisters in their time of extreme need." He notes that he and his band mates, quote, "can't be there filling sandbags, but we can rock." The singer adds, "Hopefully, with this concert we can raise money, as well as morale, for those in need." The Little River Band is also on board for the special show, dubbed "Ridin' the Storm Out - Floods of 2008 Relief Concert," while other artists are expected to be added to the bill. All money raised through the benefit will go to those in the flood-ravaged area. The concert is set for Prairie Meadows in Polk County, Iowa on July 16th.
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler Opens Up About Rehab
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is coming clean about getting clean. The singer is opening up about his recent stint in rehab, telling "Entertainment Tonight" that after several surgical procedures on his feet he became dependent on pain medication. He explains that even with 12 years of sobriety to his credit, quote, "being the good drug addict and alcoholic that I am, all the drugs and pharmaceuticals they gave me, I was off and running again." Tyler notes that he could tell it was taking a toll on his health, and he didn't want to continue down that road. That led him to a Los Angeles rehab center, where he says he, quote, "checked into detox and I came out the wormhole." The rocker completed treatment in time to join his band mates in New York City for the launch of "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith." Tyler and company took part in a media event last Friday to introduce the game, which is now in stores.
Surviving Dead Members Consider Reunion For Obama
Surviving Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, and Phil Lesh might once again show their support for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in musical form. Hart tells Billboard.com that the three have discussed the possibility in, quote, "a few friendly e-mails," but cautions fans that there are no set plans as yet. However, he notes that they, quote, "stand at the ready to be of service," explaining that they all strongly back the Illinois senator. The drummer adds, quote, "The thought of taking this country back in some shape or form, what's left of it -- it's probably one thing we can all agree on!" Hart, Weir, and Lesh have performed on behalf of Obama before. The classic rockers took the stage in San Francisco at an Obama fundraiser back in February, on the night before the California democratic primary.
Rare Beatles Film Footage Surfaces In England
The discovery of a 1964 Scottish TV interview isn't the only rare Beatles footage to surface in recent weeks. The BBC Online says a British film producer has come across some home movie footage featuring the legendary group from 1967. The eight-millimeter clips were shot by tourists in Southwest England who were documenting family trips when The Beatles drove up in their Magical Mystery Tour bus. The material shows band members relaxing, chatting and horsing around with vacationers. The footage has been incorporated into the upcoming DVD "The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Memories," offering reflections and behind-the-scenes stories about the group's third film project. The DVD is set to hit stores in the UK on August 25th. No U.S. release date has been announced.
Yesterday the BBC aired excerpts from the newly-discovered Scottish TV interview, which was taped in April, 1964 after The Beatles' first trip to the U.S. It's considered unusual in part because it was filmed in a relaxed setting instead of the more typically frenzied atmosphere that surrounded Beatlemania at the time. In the clip John Lennon and Paul McCartney discuss songwriting, and also tell the story of how they met. The film was found in a canister in a damp South London garage. It's now being preserved in a professional archive.

Founding Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey say they're pleased that their songs are going to be part of the game. Daltrey notes that it, quote, "allows our established fan base to interact with our music in a way that's fresh and exciting, while also exposing our songs to new audiences." Townshend adds that he plays "Rock Band" with his son, and appreciates that the game crosses generational boundaries. Tracks include the original master recordings of "Who Are You," "Baba O'Riley," and "Eminence Front," as well as live versions of "My Generation," "Summertime Blues," and "Young Man Blues." Hollywood Argyles Drummer's Favorite Summer Songs
Veteran rocker Jerry Riopelle is singing the praises of the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City." Asked to weigh in on the best summertime tunes, the former Hollywood Argyles drummer tells the "Arizona Republic" that the 1966 hit is, quote, "the best summer song ever." His list of hot weather favorites spans decades and genres. Riopelle notes that "Mercy," the breakthrough single by 24-year-old Welsh singer Duffy, is his "current fav," while he also enjoys Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do," and Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want To Have Fun." He also gives a nod to the Staple Singers' "I'll Take You There," calling it "just a great, inspiring piece of music."
Prehistoric Concerts
It's giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "rock concert." Resonance expert Iegor Reznikoff tells the Discovery Channel's "Discovery News" he's found a possible connection between music and art in prehistoric times. He explains that Stone Age cave paintings tend to be at or near the best acoustical spots in caves. His research also shows that cave dwellers might have actually done sound checks of sorts before decorating the walls so the paintings would be in the most resonant areas. Archaeologists have found bone flutes near caves with artwork, which could tie in with Reznikoff's theories.
The Acoustical Society of America's David Lubman says he hopes there'll be further study on the subject. He adds that when he learned of Reznikoff's work, he imagined, quote, "picturesque scenes of cave persons dancing, singing, and chanting to some kind of rhythmic music while the torch lights flickered to show the cave paintings." Reznikoff is presenting his findings at this week's Acoustics'08 conference in Paris.

Paul McCartney Announces Free Concert In Quebec
While Paul McCartney is said to be putting together a world tour, these days the former Beatle seems to be giving away shows. Canada's CTV says the legendary rocker has announced plans to play a free show in Quebec City later this month in honor of the city's 400th anniversary. Speaking yesterday in a videotaped message from London, McCartney called the upcoming show "a big gig," and noted it'll be the first time he's appeared in the provincial capital. He added that Canada and Britain, quote, "have close ties that remain strong to this day," and that he and his band are "looking forward to helping Quebec City celebrate this anniversary." McCartney's free show is set for the Plains of Abraham on July 20th.
A few weeks ago McCartney played a free show in Kiev. A crowd of 350-thousand turned out for the special "Independence Concert," which reportedly was the biggest draw ever for a performance in the Ukrane.
Reunited LaBelle Sets First Show, Album Release Date
LaBelle's Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx are making plans. Billboard.com says the trio has a release date set for their upcoming reunion album. They've tapped Lenny Kravitz and the team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to produce the still untitled effort, which is slated to hit stores on September 23rd. In addition, LaBelle is on board for this weekend's Essence Festival. A rep for the group says Saturday's performance, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, will be LaBelle's first public concert in more than 30 years, noting their last show was back in January 1977. But even with the LaBelle reunion well on its way, Patti LaBelle is still doing work on her own. She'll be performing in Albuquerque, New Mexico tonight. In addition, she has a new patriotic single coming out in time for the July 4th holiday. The Gamble-produced "I Am An American," featuring Patti with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra and Choirs, hits digital outlets today.
Name Troubles For T. Rex Tribute Group
A T. Rex tribute band is getting heat for its name. The group is formally known as T. Rex (A Celebration of Marc and Mickey) but goes by T. Rex for concerts and recordings. This has sparked a petition drive to get the group to change its misleading moniker, since its only tie to the '70s glam band is through drummer Paul Fenton, who was never an official member of T. Rex but did record and tour with the group. Band manager Barry Newby tells MusicRadar.com the current T. Rex is only trying to honor the late T. Rex founder Marc Bolan and longtime percussionist Mickey Finn -- who started the tribute group back in 1997. Finn died five years ago, and Newby explains that the late rocker had wanted the group, called Mickey Finn's T. Rex, to continue after he was gone and keep T. Rex in its name. But producer Tony Visconti, who was at the helm for many original T. Rex albums, is calling it "a dangerous precedent." He's among those who've signed the online petition, along with David Bowie and original T. Rex drummer Bill Legend. The petition is posted at www.petitiononline.com/nobolan1.
More Classic Rockers Voicing Support For Obama
David Crosby and Bob Weir are among the latest classic rockers to speak out in favor of presumptive democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. While Crosby has supported democratic candidates in the past -- including John Kerry in 2004 -- he notes that things are different now. The singer tells "Rolling Stone" that his work for Kerry was done, quote, "with large reservations because I thought he was kind of a wooden Indian." But he notes that with Obama, quote, "you can't help feeling hopeful." Weir also sees hope in the Obama campaign. The Grateful Dead guitarist says he finds similarities between the Illinois senator and the late President John Kennedy, explaining, quote, "John Kennedy was able to bring the country together. I have a feeling Obama might be able to do that as well." A number of other classic rockers, including Stevie Wonder, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, and Chuck Berry, have also voiced their support for Obama.
Bette Midler Given Long Lost Wedding Pics
Bette Midler finally has photos of her wedding. The singer and actress tells TV's "The Insider" that she and her husband, artist Martin Rochus Sebastian von Haselberg, quote, "were married in the Starlight Chapel in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator" back in 1984, and following the ceremony they never received any pictures from the event. But she notes that three weeks ago, after the Starlight Chapel shut down, the man who closed the facility sent her and her husband the photos of their nuptials. Midler says, quote, "we were so shocked." The 62-year-old singer is currently in Vegas, performing her stage act "The Showgirl Must Go On" at Caesars Palace.
"Tie Me Kangaroo Down" Singer Entering Aussi Music Hall
Rolf Harris is one of the new members of the Australian Recording Industry Association's Hall of Fame. The veteran performer, best known here for the 1963 hit "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport," is being recognized for his musical accomplishments both at home and abroad. With "Kangaroo," Harris became the first Aussi artist to reach number three on the Billboard pop chart, and the song hit number one on the U.S. Adult Contemporary list. The track also includes a Wobble Board -- an instrument of his own unintentional design. In addition, Harris was a pioneer in incorporating electronic instruments in his music, and he's credited with inspiring David Bowie's use of the stylophone in the song "Space Oddity." A one-hit wonder in the U.S., over the decades Harris' career continued to grow in Australia and the UK, and he's remained musically active at home and in Britain. Harris' ARIA Hall of Fame induction takes place in Melbourne tonight.

Poison Drummer Celebrates Freedom With Charity Fundraiser
Poison rocker Rikki Rockett is celebrating his freedom. The drummer hosted the "Rikki Rockett Is Exonerated Party" in Valencia, California on Saturday. The charity event follows Rockett's recent exoneration of rape charges. The rocker was arrested in March after a woman claimed he forced himself on her in a hotel room at a Mississippi casino last September. Last month the Neshoba County District Attorney dropped all the charges after determining that Rockett couldn't have committed the crime, as he hadn't been in Mississippi at all during September 2007. Had the case gone to trial and Rockett been convicted, he could have been sentenced to life in prison.
Money raised from the "Rikki Rockett Is Exonerated Party" is going to Centurion Ministries, an organization that works to help set free and clear the names of people wrongly. The event included a motorcycle ride, barbecue, auction, and concert. Rockett says in a post on his MySpace page that he, quote, "couldn't be happier" with how things went, noting he's particularly pleased with the auction's success. He adds that he's hoping to make his Centurion Ministries fundraiser an annual event.
No New Judge For Spector Trial
It doesn't look like Phil Spector will be getting a new judge. E! Online says the California Supreme Court decided last week to also bypass the legendary producer's request to have Judge Larry Fidler taken off his case. The state supreme court's rejection follows an appellate court decision against conducting a hearing in the matter. Defense attorney Doron Weinberg reportedly wanted a new judge, claiming that during the first trial Fidler showed a bias against Spector in the way he instructed the jury. But judge who first fielded the request ruled that Weinberg didn't offer adequate evidence that Fidler was biased, and added that the lawyer had waited too long to file the motion. Spector's retrial is scheduled to begin on September 29th.
Spector is facing a murder charge in the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. He claims she killed herself, but he's been accused of firing the fatal shot. His first trial ended in a mistrial after jury members announced that they couldn't reach a unanimous decision. After seven days of deliberation the jurors said they were deadlocked, and without indicating whether the majority was for or against a conviction revealed they were split seven-to-five. But instead of dismissing the panel Judge Fidler gave jurors additional instructions. The mistrial was declared after the jury was deadlocked for a second time, following four more days of deliberations. However, this time the jury was split ten-to-two in favor of conviction.
Aerosmith Unveils Band's "Guitar Hero" Game
"Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" is now in stores. Billboard.com says band members were on hand for a special unveiling of the game at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York last Friday. During the event frontman Steven Tyler shared how band members worked with game creators for the animation process, noting it was difficult to make, quote, "this thing be all that Aerosmith is." But drummer Joey Kramer noted that developing the game got him to go back and listen to some of the group's older material, which sparked a new sense of pride in Aerosmith's catalog. Guitarist Joe Perry added that he believes "Guitar Hero" also highlights the way the music industry is changing. He predicted that the games will become significant in music distribution, and that they could become, quote, "as important as albums used to be." "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith" is the first game in the Activision series that focuses on a single band. It arrived in stores yesterday.
Jimmy Page Earns Honorary Doctorate
Jimmy Page has an honorary degree to his credit. Britain's University of Surrey gave the Led Zeppelin guitarist the award in recognition of his lasting musical legacy. He formally received the Doctor of the University degree in a ceremony at Guilford Cathedral on June 20th. During the event Page also had a gift for the school. He donated an autographed guitar which will be the prize at the upcoming GuilFest. The University of Surrey holds a place of significance in Led Zeppelin history. The band, which originally was called the New Yardbirds, played their first concert as Led Zeppelin at the school on October 25th, 1968.
Beach Boys, James Burton Headed To Fender Hall
The Beach Boys and James Burton are among those headed to the Fender Hall of Fame. "Vintage Guitar" magazine says the legendary surf group and Ricky Nelson's one-time guitarist have been tapped for the honor along with Western swing guitarist Bill Carson, photographer Bob Perine, who did marketing and advertising for Fender from 1957 until 1969, and former Fender employees Don Johnston and Dan Smith. This is the second group of inductees into the guitar maker's hall, which was established last year to honor artists, innovators, and others who've been significant in the company's history. The induction ceremony will include video tributes to the honorees and a musical salute from a band made up of Fender employees. The 2008 Fender Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place in Tempe, Arizona on August 8th.
Syd Barrett UK Tribute Developing
The late Syd Barrett will be honored with a number of events. "The City Wakes" tribute is expected to include a concert, art exhibits, guided tours, a music workshop, and other activities in tribute to the founding Pink Floyd member. The concert is slated to feature a video and light display to accompany Barrett's music, while the show's musical director will also conduct a workshop delving into Barrett's songs, both musically and lyrically. Two exhibits are being developed -- one of the classic rocker's own paintings, while the other, "Mind Over Matter: Images of Pink Floyd," boasts the photographs of Storm Thorgerson. Guided tours will take fans to Pink Floyd-related landmarks in Barrett's hometown of Cambridge, England. A new book, with interviews with Barrett's family and friends along with some of his drawings and letters -- which haven't ever before been published, is also in the works. "The City Wakes" Barrett tribute events are scheduled to take place in Cambridge, England this fall. More information is available online at TheCityWakes.org.uk.

Ringo's Visual Art On Display
While Ringo Starr is currently on the road playing music, he's also sharing more of his visual artwork. An exhibit of the former Beatle's computer art is on display at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Hollywood, Florida. The collection, called "Abstract Face," includes nearly 40 limited edition works hand-signed by the legendary rocker. The work highlights Ringo's use of color, and is described as as "light-hearted" and "whimsical." The display, which opened yesterday, will run through July 7th -- which is Ringo's birthday. Fans might be able to catch him at the exhibit next week. He'll bring his All-Starr Band to South Florida on July 3rd, and he's expected to attend a special reception before the show. More information is available at the Seminole Hard Rock's website. All money generated from the "Abstract Face" exhibit is going to charity. Proceeds are earmarked for Starr's Lotus Foundation, which supports a variety of health and social welfare organizations. Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band will be performing in Holmdel, New Jersey tonight.
Meat Loaf Not Retiring
Meat Loaf says he's not ending his career anytime soon. The classic rocker admits to Britain's "Guardian" that those rumors that he announced his retirement during a disastrous concert in Newcastle, England last fall were true. He explains that he, quote, "totally freaked out" when his voice became raspy and he couldn't sing. Meat was diagnosed with a cyst on his vocal chords, which ruptured and went away on its own. He tells the newspaper that he's still worried that some day he'll lose his voice and it won't return. He also notes that he always feels guilty after shows like Newcastle, adding that those concerts, quote, "will eat at me until I die." So Meat continues performing -- in part to make it up to fans for strange, poor, or missed shows. But he also contends that he has to keep on rocking because, quote, "What am I gonna do, run a hotdog stand? Be a real estate agent? I don't know anything else." Meat Loaf is launching his European Casa De Carne Tour in Plymouth, England tonight.
Neil Diamond Making Glastonbury Debut This Weekend
Neil Diamond is currently on the road in Europe. The veteran singer-songwriter recently told Britain's "Daily Mail" that even after all these years he still loves performing live. He noted that touring can be physically demanding, and while he's, quote, "tried to keep myself pretty fit over the years," he's also done "some serious training" for his latest trek. He added that he follows a, quote, "strictly controlled" diet. The 67-year-old Diamond is on the road in support of his latest CD, "Home Before Dark," his first-ever number one album in the U.S. and his only collection of new material to hit the top of the UK chart. Diamond will soon mark another career first overseas. He'll make his debut at Britain's Glastonbury Festival on Sunday. Diamond's slated to perform at London's Wembley Arena tonight.
Dr. John Continues Fighting For New Orleans
Dr. John has been promoting a viable New Orleans music scene for decades. The classic rock and R&B star notes that it was threatened well before 2005's devastating hurricane season, telling Australia's "Sydney Morning Herald" it became endangered back in the '60s with plans to clean up the city by closing all the clubs. But Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged the Gulf Coast three years ago, made the cause more immediate -- and brought more attention. It also inspired John's latest CD. He says he, quote, "couldn't live with myself" if he didn't make "City That Care Forgot." The album reflects on the political response to the storm along with the cultural and environmental changes that have occurred as a result. John doesn't claim to be any sort of expert, noting, quote, "It ain't like musicians know anything more than anybody else." He explains, quote, "I'm just trying to be a voice for people that ain't got none right now." He's currently on the road in support of the recent release. He'll be performing with fellow New Orleans natives The Neville Brothers in Niagara Falls, New York tonight.
Randy Newman: Writing For Himself Vs. Writing For Movies
Randy Newman says crafting music for his own album is much harder than composing a film score. The singer-songwriter tells Rollingstone.com that he could, quote, "write a song about a Bulgarian fan dancer if they give me an assignment," but when he's trying to come up with material for a CD, quote, "that's more about confronting an empty room with nothing in my head." That might be one reason why it's been nearly a decade since Newman's issued an album that wasn't related to a film. "Harps & Angels" is the follow up to 1999's "Bad Love." The ten-track disc, which includes the topical tune "A Few Words in Defense of My Country" that Newman released as a single via iTunes last year, will hit stores on August 5th. Newman also has a few shows on the horizon. He'll be performing the the Los Angeles Philharmonic next week, playing three shows at the Hollywood Bowl on July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

Reported Israeli Concert Plans Fuel McCartney Tour Rumors
More indications that Paul McCartney is planning to tour are coming from the Middle East. Ynetnews.com says managers for the former Beatle confirm that the legendary rocker will be going on the road, and the upcoming trek will include his first-ever concert in Israel. The proposed show is reportedly being planned for either Tel Aviv or Ramat Gan in late September. Earlier this year Israeli officials formally welcomed McCartney -- as well as fellow surviving Beatle Ringo Starr -- to take part in the country's 60th anniversary celebration. The invite came along with an official apology for a 43-year-old incident. Back in 1965 The Beatles had planned to perform in Israel but the government cancelled the concert, in part because at the time some politicians were concerned that the group might be a bad influence on Israeli youth. In the apology authorities expressed their regrets that the misunderstanding about the band kept The Beatles from visiting the country and entertaining their Israeli fans.
Obama Shares Who's On His iPod
Presumptive democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a classic rock fan. The Illinois senator tells "Rolling Stone" that Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are among his favorite artists, and he calls Stevie Wonder his "musical hero." Obama explains that he started getting into music when Wonder was in his so-called "classic period" from 1972 until 1976, when he released "Music of My Mind," "Talking Book," "Fulfillingness' First Finale," "Innervisions," and "Songs in the Key of Life." He notes, quote, "Those are as brilliant a set of five albums as we've ever seen." Obama also shares that he has, quote, "probably 30 Dylan songs on my iPod," and that "Maggie's Farm" is, quote, "one of my favorites during the political season" because "it speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."
Obama also says he has wide ranging musical tastes, and his iPod also carries tunes from blues great Howlin' Wolf, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow. Obama also has a lot of praise for rapper Jay-Z, calling him "a brilliant talent and a good guy," and adds, "I enjoy how he thinks."
Stevie Wonder's Many Projects
Stevie Wonder has a lot going on these days. Billboard.com says the Motown great, who's currently on a North American tour, has several projects -- and potential projects -- on the horizon. He says that with one of his works-in-progress, which he's calling "Through the Eyes of Wonder," he wants to use his live performances to show, quote, "how I see the world and how most various things affected me." He's also still putting together "The Gospel Inspired by Lula," his tribute disc honoring his mother. In addition, while Wonder won't confirm that he's planning to team up with Tony Bennett on a duets disc that Quincy Jones would produce, he admits it's a possibility. He notes that he and Bennett, quote, "talked about doing some stuff together" and that he and Jones "have always wanted to work together on a project." Wonder adds that he plans to participate in some way in media pieces marking the 50th anniversary of Motown. He offered no timeline for any of the projects. As his tour rolls on, Wonder will be performing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin tonight, launching this year's Summerfest.
Cher Fan Arrested
A Cher fan has been arrested for allegedly harassing the star. "E! News" reports 36-year-old Calvin Houghland was charged early yesterday morning with public intoxication and disorderly conduct for his actions in the Tootsies Orchid Lounge in Nashville, Tennessee. Houghland reportedly tried to approach the singer but was asked to leave by club management. He allegedly returned a short time later, snuck into the VIP section and grabbed Cher by the waist before he was removed from the premises. After his third failed attempt to reach the singer, Houghland reportedly called the police himself and claimed that he had been assaulted.
Police report that Houghland failed a field sobriety test, but Cher declined to press charges. Houghland then asked to be taken into custody, was jailed overnight. His bail was set at three-thousand-dollars. Reps for Cher have not commented on the incident.
Gary Glitter Planning Post-Prison Comeback
Disgraced rocker Gary Glitter is looking to the future. The "Rock and Roll, Part 2" singer, who's currently in a Vietnamese prison, tells the country's state-run "People's Public Security" newspaper that he wants to get back to work once he's released. He explains that he has an unfinished album, and while locked up he's been thinking about how he'll complete the project. Glitter, who's legal name is Paul Gadd, also notes that he's looking into where he'll go once he's a free man. He says he's considering relocating to either Singapore or Hong Kong.
Glitter was arrested in November 2005 following accusations that he'd sexually abused two pre-teen girls at his villa in a southern Vietnamese resort town. He was found guilty of child molestation at his trial in March 2006, and sentenced to three years behind bars. He was credited for time served before his trial, and last year received a three-month sentence reduction, which means Glitter's due to be released this August.
Dennis Wilson's Solo Work Gets Warm Reception
The late Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" still has a strong audience. A revised edition of the Beach Boys drummer's critically acclaimed solo 1977 album hit stores last week, and has made impressing showings on both U.S. and European charts. It's debuting on the Billboard Catalog chart at number eight, and entering the UK Album Chart at number 16. Norwegians have really embraced the album, which is landing at number five on that country's music chart. In addition, "Pacific Ocean Blue" was the number four rock release for Amazon.com on its first day of availability, and reps for Amoeba Records in Los Angeles say its the store's second-best selling album.
Wilson originally issued the disc in 1977, but it fell out of print within two years. It resurfaced for a short time as a CD back in 1991, but otherwise has been unavailable for the better part of the past three decades. The new "Pacific Ocean Blue" includes all the original tracks along with a host of never before released bonus tunes which Wilson had intended to use on his next record, which he never completed. The album's release is serving as a tribute of sorts to the classic rocker, marking the 25th anniversary of his death. The 39-year-old Wilson drowned off the California coast at Marina Del Ray on December 28th, 1983.

CSNY Film Offers An Unpolished Look At The Group
Neil Young says viewers who watch the upcoming Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young documentary "CSNY: Deja Vu" will see the band as they actually performed live. He tells "Billboard" they didn't do any post-production touch-ups, noting, quote, "It's not overdubbed. There's no fixes. It's straight from the board." As a result, Young says, quote, "it's got rough spots all the way through it, which I think is refreshing, especially considering the subject matter." "Deja Vu" chronicles the famed quartet's politically charged 2006 Freedom of Speech tour, presenting the connections between the musicians, the music, and the fans as well as the parallels between the political climate in the U.S. during the Vietnam War 40 years ago and the current Iraq War. Young, who directed the film, says he felt no need to polish the sound, explaining that audiences will either like the movie or they won't and, quote, "chroming it is not going to help it." "CSNY: Deja Vu" will arrive in theaters and hit stores in a home video release on July 25th.
Ringo Shares His Birthday Wish
Ringo Starr says he doesn't mind getting older. The former Beatle, who'll turn 68 on July 7th, tells Canada's Sun Media that for him it's just, quote, "another birthday," which he enjoys because he loves receiving gifts. But he notes that he doesn't need presents on his special day. The rock legend is asking that people just pause for a moment at noon, wherever they are, and say "peace and love." The phrase has been Starr's motto for decades. He admits that he's been both "laughed at" and "praised" for voicing the sentiment, adding that the reaction doesn't matter, quote, "as long as you do it." Starr is currently on tour with his 10th All Starr Band. This edition of the group includes "Dream Weaver" Gary Wright, keyboardist Edgar Winter, Average White Band's Hamish Stuart, singer Billy Squire, former Men At Work frontman Colin Hay, and drummer Gregg Bissonette. They'll be performing in Boston tonight.

Al Green, Quincy Jones Honored At BET Awards
Al Green still knows how to command an audience. The reverend received the BET Lifetime Achievement Award at last night's BET Awards '08. During the BET broadcast, R&B star John Legend introduced Green, encapsulating his influence by saying he's, quote, "your favorite singer's favorite singer." Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and Maxwell offered up a musical tribute including "I'm Still In Love With You," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Simply Beautiful" before Green took the stage. In a short acceptance speech Green noted that he felt "honored and humbled" by the praise, and thanked his fans for their support over the decades. He then stepped up to perform, leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of "Let's Stay Together."
Audience members remained on their feet, dancing in the aisles as Green continued with "Love and Happiness." In addition, Quincy Jones was recognized with the BET Humanitarian Award. The noted composer, arranger, producer, conductor, and performer has used his power and celebrity in an effort to support people in need across the globe and make the world a better place, both with his own work and through his support of other charitable organizations. Jones called his award presentation one of the "treasured moments" of his life, but noted that giving back just makes sense. The 75-year-old star explained that he knows hardship, growing up on Chicago's South Side during the depression, and those early experiences -- which he'll never forget -- motivate him to help others who are struggling. Rapper Kanye West was the event's big winner, taking two awards. The BET Awards '08 were presented in a ceremony in Los Angeles and aired on BET last night.
Phil Spector's "Wall Of Sound" Performers Getting Rockwalk Induction
Members of the famed Wrecking Crew, the studio band featured on numerous Los Angeles recordings in the 1960s, are the latest to be inducted into the Hollywood Rockwallk. The ensemble -- which at times included such notable players as guitarists Glen Campbell and Al Casey, keyboardists Leon Russell and Dr. John, sax players Plas Johnson and Steve Douglas, bassist Max Bennett, guitar and bass player Carol Kaye, and drummers Hal Blaine and Jim Gordon -- will be welcomed onto the Rockwalk in a ceremony at the Guitar Center Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard at noon today.
The Wrecking Crew is credited with creating Phil Spector's famed "Wall Of Sound." They also worked with the Beach Boys, performing on such classics as "Good Vibrations" and "California Girls," and the album "Pet Sounds." Their numerous other credits include The Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man," Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe," and The Carpenters' "Close To You," as well as sessions for the Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Monkees.
"Tie Me Kangaroo Down" Singer Earning Aussi Music Honor
Rolf Harris is slated to be honored in his homeland. The veteran performer, best known here for the 1963 hit "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport," is set for induction into the Australian Recording Industry Association's Hall of Fame. With "Kangaroo," Harris became the first Aussi artist to land in the top tier on the U.S. charts. The song peaked at number three on the Billboard pop chart and reached number one on the Adult Contemporary list. The track includes an instrument of his own unintentional design. Formally educated as a painter, Harris was prepping a sheet of hardboard for a portrait when he discovered it made an interesting sound while drying. He dubbed it the Wobble Board. Harris also incorporated early electronic instruments in his music, and is credited with inspiring David Bowie's use of the stylophone in the song "Space Oddity." While Harris only had modest success in the U.S. in the '60s, his fame continued to grow at home and in Britain, and over the decades he's remained active in the UK and Australian music and art scenes. Harris will be formally inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on July 1st.

A Beatles-Themed Video Game Reportedly In The Works
The music of the Beatles music may be making its way to a video game. "The Financial Times" is reporting that both Activision and MTV Games are discussing the possibility of a Beatles-themed game with reps for the legendary group. According to an unnamed source, a multi-million-dollar deal could be announced in the coming weeks. Officials with the Fab Four's Apple Corps; the UK label EMI, which owns the band's master recordings; and Activision aren't commenting on the matter. MTV reps aren't specific, but say they're, quote, "talking to virtually every major rock artist all the time about ways we might get them involved in 'Rock Band'," the company's game distributed by Electronic Arts. Activision is behind "Guitar Hero."
Over the decades The Beatles have been extremely slow in embracing new technology, and have been very selective in making licensing agreements. The band was one of the last of the classic rock giants to release its catalog on CD, and Beatles material still isn't available digitally.

Shirley Bassey To Miss Mandela Concert
Shirley Bassey won't be participating in the upcoming Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Concert as originally planned. The 71-year-old singing legend is still recovering from emergency surgery she underwent last month, and her spokesman says her doctor has advised her against traveling to Britain for the event. He adds that Bassey is, quote, "hugely disappointed and was looking forward to the show immensely." The Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Concert will take place at London's Hyde Park on Friday, featuring a variety of performers including Queen + Paul Rodgers, Annie Lennox, and Simple Minds.
Several weeks ago Bassey, who lives in Monaco, was awakened in the middle of the night with severe abdominal pain. She was taken to a local hospital where she had the emergency procedure. Her reps haven't offered any details regarding her condition or her ailment. The Welsh-born Bassey is perhaps best known in the U.S. for the James Bond themes "Goldfinger," "Diamonds Are Forever," and "Moonraker." That's also Bassey singing "History Repeating" in ads for Pantene hair care products.
Paul McCartney's Ex Considering A "Celebrity Apprentice" Run
Paul McCartney's ex-wife could be returning to TV. According to the "New York Post's" "Page Six," Heather Mills is considering taking a turn on the next season of "The Celebrity Apprentice." Apparently "Apprentice" head Donald Trump is interested in having Mills compete on the show. It does seem that Mills is planning to spend more time in the U.S. She recently bought a five-million-dollar apartment in Manhattan's West Village. But Mills isn't sure she wants to commit to a full season of programs, so it's possible she'll just appear as a special guest on one episode. Mills was previously on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," becoming the first contender on that show to dance with a prosthetic leg. She appeared on the fourth season of "Dancing" in the spring of 2007, and was the fifth person eliminated in the field of eleven. Mills and McCartney's divorce was recently finalized, following a lengthy and bitter public dispute following their split in May 2006. She was awarded nearly 50-million-dollars from the former Beatle in the settlement.

Comedian George Carlin Dead at 71
(Los Angeles, CA) -- Comedian George Carlin, considered one of the most influential and controversial comedians of the late 20th century is dead at the age of 71. Carlin checked into Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California Sunday afternoon. He died of a heart attack around six p.m. Pacific time. In addition to his edgy stand up routines Carlin appeared in several movies including "Jersey Girl" and "Scary Movie 3." He was the voice of Fillmore in the 2006 film "Cars." Among Carlin's most famous routines was the "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." In 1978 the U.S. Supreme Court agreed with Carlin that the words in his routine were indecent and the Federal Communications Commission could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening to radio or television. Last week, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Carlin would be honored for his 50 year career in a special ceremony to be held in November. The event will be broadcast later by PBS.
Ringo's Travel Troubles Forces Weekend Cancellation
Ringo Starr's tour has hit a snag. The former Beatle was scheduled to perform at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York Saturday night. But according to a post on the venue's website, the show had to be cancelled because of a, quote, "transportation and equipment breakdown at the United States border." The legendary rocker launched his latest All Starr Band tour with shows last week in Canada. The Bethel show isn't expected to be rescheduled, and ticketholders will be able to get refunds. Ringo's All Starrs this time around include "Dream Weaver" Gary Wright, keyboardist Edgar Winter, Average White Band's Hamish Stuart, singer Billy Squire, former Men At Work frontman Colin Hay, and drummer Gregg Bissonette. The group performed in Uncasville, Connecticut last night as scheduled. They'll be in New York City tomorrow.
Motley Crue Set With New CD, Summer Tour
Motley Crue is getting ready to hit the road, launching Cruefest next week in support of a new album. During an appearance Friday on CNN's "Larry King Live," frontman Vince Neil said the band will once again deliver a visually dazzling performance, but admitted it's become a challenge to live up to Motley Crue's reputation for spectacular concerts.
Motley Crue will be touring behind the new CD "Saints Of Los Angeles." The album, which will arrive in stores tomorrow, is the band's first full studio effort to feature original group members Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, and Tommy Lee since 1997's "Generation Swine." They note they used their 2001 autobiography "The Dirt" as the basis for the material on the disc. King also tried to delve into personal matters with the group, asking Lee about his recent reunion with ex-wife Pamela Anderson. While the drummer confirmed that they are once again a couple, he wouldn't offer any details on their reconciliation. Cruefest, featuring Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Trapt, and Nikki Sixx's Sixx A.M. along with Motley Crue, will begin in West Palm Beach, Florida on July 1st.
Paul Anka Engaged
Paul Anka's getting ready to walk down the aisle again. The 66-year-old performer says he's engaged, noting he's proposed to girlfriend Anna Aberg, a 37-year-old personal trainer. Anka explains that over the past year they'd talked about tying the knot, and he popped the question recently over dinner in New York, saying, quote, "Let's do this." The couple's wedding is coming up soon. They plan to hold their ceremony in Sardinia, Italy on July 26th. Anka and Aberg have been together for four years and have a two-and-a-half-year-old son together, but their combined family is much larger. Anka also has five girls from his first marriage, a 37-year union that ended in divorce in 2000, while Aberg has a six-year-old daughter from a past relationship.
Brian Wilson Most Proud Of "Smile"
While the Beach Boys have received countless accolades for the 1966 album "Pet Sounds," Brian Wilson says he's most proud of "Smile." It was while working on the follow up to "Pet Sounds" that Wilson suffered his breakdown and the project -- as he intended it -- was shelved. The Beach Boys' "Smiley Smile" was issued instead, containing some of the tracks intended for "Smile" but not the same disc. Wilson calls "Smile's" completion "amazing." He tells the UK tabloid "The Sun" that he, quote, "never imagined it coming out," but five years ago his wife and his manager suggested he try to finish the elusive album. He was able to team up once again with Van Dyke Parks, with whom he started the project, and in 2004 -- 38 years after they began the effort -- "Smile" hit stores. The disc also gave Wilson the first Grammy of his career, for the song "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow." Wilson's now prepping for the release of a new masterpiece. "That Lucky Old Sun," inspired by and including a cover of the Louis Armstrong's 1949 song, is due in stores on September 2nd.
Boz Scaggs Tackling Bluegrass, Standards
Boz Scaggs might be the next classic rocker venturing into bluegrass. The veteran performer tells Billboard.com that his move this direction was sparked last year, at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. At the San Francisco event he teamed up guitarist Buddy Miller, keyboardist Jon Cleary, and steel guitar player Greg Leisz, and played Jerry Lee Lewis, early Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, and Bill Monroe material. Scaggs notes he, quote, "had more fun in that collaboration that I've had in a long time." He says they'll be returning to the festival this October, adding that the ensemble might also do some recording together. But next on the horizon for Scaggs is another set of standards. He calls "Speak Low" "a sort of progressive, experimental effort," explaining that he found it "challenging" and "adventurous" given his background as an R&B vocalist. The album is Scaggs' follow up to 2003's "But Beautiful." He anticipates having "Speak Low" ready for a September release.
John Sebastian Reflects On Songwriters Hall Of Fame Induction

Albert Hammond, Desmond Child, Loretta Lynn, and Alan Menken were also welcomed into the Hall along with Sebastian. In addition, Paul Anka and Anne Murray were among those who received special awards for career accomplishments. The Songwriters Hall of Fame induction and awards ceremony took place in New York last Thursday.

Ted Nugent's Big July 4th Plans
Ted Nugent is approaching his six-thousandth concert, and he's planning to make it a big Independence Day homecoming bash. The classic rocker says the upcoming show -- slated for Detroit, Michigan's DTE Energy Amphitheater on July 4th -- will be, quote, "the most emotional, sensual, grind fest of what you've witnessed on the 'Rolling Thunder Tour' so far -- the highest level of energy from anybody, anywhere, anytime." Nugent also finds the concert's date appropriate, calling it "rather demonstrative of my American dream firestorm for almost 60 years." The Motor City Madman adds that getting to perform with bassist Greg Smith and drummer Mick Brown indicates that, quote, "God loves me more than he loves you because he keeps sending me these unbelievable world-class virtuosos to propel and throttle."
Nugent has a few more stops on his Rolling Thunder '08 Tour before he reaches his Motown milestone. He's currently in California for shows in Agoura Hills tonight and Kelseyville tomorrow. The Nuge is also set to appear at the Rib Fest in Naperville, Illinois on July 3rd.

Phil Spector Being Sued For Big Hotel Tab
Phil Spector has another lawsuit on his hands. The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles is suing the Hall of Fame producer to the tune of 110-thousand-dollars for an alleged unpaid hotel tab. The hotel housed Spector and his legal team during his six-month murder trial last year. The "Los Angeles Times" reports Spector had an agreement to pay in advance every two weeks, but he stopped paying the bill four months into his stay. Spector rented four luxury suites at a discount for his wife and himself, his attorneys, witnesses, and guests. The Westin provided him with special accommodations, including "heavenly beds," a complimentary workout room for his lawyers, and a secured "litigation war room" with guarded key-card access. Hotel reps say the company tried in vain to work out payment, but Spector refused unless the amount was drastically reduced.
Spector's also prepping for his second murder trial. Last year's proceedings ended with a hung jury, so prosecutors are retrying the case. Spector's accused in the fatal 2003 shooting of actress Lana Clarkson, who died in the foyer of Spector's Los Angeles-area home. His new trial is scheduled to begin in September.
'50s R&B Singer Gets Nine Years For Bank Robberies
A former member of the Coronets is headed to prison. The Cleveland "Plain Dealer" says R&B singer Lester Russaw was sentenced to more than nine years behind bars Wednesday for two armed bank robberies last year. At his sentencing the 74-year-old vocalist said he acted out of desperation, explaining that he'd lost his job and had spent months trying to find a new one. He noted that he "wasn't greedy," adding that he didn't steal the money to buy drugs or luxury items, but just to get by. After his arrest last November, Russaw said he faced mounting medical bills as he battled prostate cancer. He got away with a total of nearly 25-thousand-dollars in the two robberies.
During Wednesday's hearing Russaw's lawyer noted that the early '50s star had no intention of harming anyone. However, because he used a gun in the robberies he faced a mandatory sentence of at least seven years. U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver described Russaw's decision to resort to crime a "tragedy." He said he'd try to arrange for Russaw to serve his time at a place where he could receive cancer treatments.
The Coronets were among the numerous doo-wop groups of the 1950s. Their big break came after they got the attention of famed DJ Alan Freed. The Cleveland-based ensemble is best known for the 1953 hit "Nadine," which peaked at number three on the Billboard R&B chart.
